Chapter 1He sat in the small booth and sipped his water. He pulled his hat even lower on his forehead and tried to blend in with the bench. It felt incredible to have this moment to himself. He was able to sit and think without distractions or obligations. He glanced at the time on his phone, sighed and tilted his head back. Unfortunately it couldn’t last forever.*******************************************************************************************Sara grabbed her food off the counter as they called her name. She was in a hurry and the restaurant was crowded. She probably should have chosen somewhere else to eat since she only had an hour for her lunch break. She peered around the room trying to find an open table or booth. It looked like she might just have to sit in front of the stone fireplace, good thing it was warm outside so the fire wasn’t actually burning. She glanced over her shoulder one more time to see if anything had opened. “Oh” she cried as she smacked right into the back of someone. He turned around quickly and grabbed her tray of food as it tumbled to the ground. Somehow he managed to catch the sandwich but the chips and glass of water weren’t as lucky. Sara quickly grabbed some napkins as he set the tray on the table. “I’m so sorry!” she gushed as she tried to wipe up the water. He bent down in front of her with more napkins.“Don’t worry about it.” He smiled “It happens.” They both stood up then and he took the rest of the wet napkins from her hand. He tossed them in the garbage that was close to the booth and waved to the bench opposite where he had been sitting. “It looks like this is the only available seat.”Sara looked nervously around the restaurant. “Um, it looks like you’re right. Do you mind if I take it? Were you leaving?”He looked at the time on his phone and then over at the door. After a brief pause he looked back at Sara and smiled. “No, I wasn’t leaving, but I don’t mind sharing my booth.”Sara hesitated before sitting down. “Are you sure? Are you here alone?”“Yes, I was enjoying some alone time. Do you want me to get you some more food? That sandwich isn’t very big.”Sara smiled, “No that’s alright. I’m actually on my lunch break and I don’t have much time. I’ll just eat this.”He sat down and Sara stared across the table at him “Are you really sure you don’t mind me sitting here? I don’t want to interrupt your alone time.”He laughed, “Don’t worry about it, seriously. I was starting to get tired of it anyway.”“Aren’t you eating anything?” Sara asked as she bit into her sandwich.“No, I’m actually just waiting for some friends. They’re down the street doing some shopping.”“Oh, alright. I’m Sara by the way.” She smiled and reached out her hand.“Joe” He shook her hand. “So where do you work?”“Oh, I work at the daycare just up the road. How about you? Are you from the city or just here to shop?”“No, we’re just here visiting. I’m actually from…” He paused considering his answer “Um, I’m from the East Coast.”“Are you visiting family?” Sara asked before taking another bite.Joe hesitated again “No, we’re actually…”“I’m sorry!” Sara exclaimed “I’m asking too many questions! You don’t have to answer that.”Joe laughed “That’s ok. How about if I ask you some questions?” He smiled.“Oh alright, but my life really isn’t that interesting.” Sara smiled back.“Well, are YOU from around here?” he asked.“No,” Sara replied “I’m actually from the south. I moved up here a few years ago to live with a friend.”“A boyfriend?” Joe asked and then continued “I’m sorry! Now I’m asking the wrong questions.”“Don’t worry about it. No, it wasn’t a boyfriend. It was my best friend from high school.”“So do you like living here?”“Not really.” Sara finished the last bite of her sandwich. “It’s too cold. I prefer warm weather.”Joe grinned “You’ve got a crumb right there.” He said as he pointed to the side of Sara’s mouth.“Oh geez” she stuttered and tried to wipe the crumb off. “Did I get it?”Joe reached forward and wiped the crumb off for her. “There, much better.” He let his hand linger for just the slightest second before pulling away and asking “So how come you’re still here? Why don’t you move back home?”“I don’t know.” Sara pondered “Once you start a life somewhere it’s kind of hard to move on. I mean I’m not a kid anymore and I’ve got responsibilities that I can’t walk away from, like bills that won’t pay themselves.” She smiled.Joe looked at her intently but didn’t say anything. Sara’s cheeks started to turn red and she looked down at the table.“Why are you looking at me like that?”“Your eyes are green.” Joe said matter-of-factly. “I like green eyes.”Sara blushed even more. “Ok, well thanks.” She looked back up at Joe but noticed that he was looking over her shoulder now. She started to turn her head but then Joe grabbed her wrist and said quickly “When’s your lunch break over?” Sara whipped her head back around and looked down at Joe’s hand on her wrist. She couldn’t seem to figure out what he had just asked her. “What?” she faltered as he pulled his hand away. Sara looked up at him as he said again “Your lunch break, when is it over?” She frowned, he seemed to suddenly be in a hurry to get rid of her. Glancing down at her phone Sara said quietly “Yeah, I should probably leave.” Joe stood up and reached for her arm. Sara was already grabbing her purse as he practically dragged her out the door, looking back a few times. “I’ll walk you back.” He said as they stepped out onto the sidewalk. He let go of her arm and reached for her hand instead. He still seemed to be in quite a hurry and Sara was feeling very confused. “I drove.” She stammered.“Oh.” He paused and looked into her eyes before glancing back into the restaurant through the windows. He hesitated, “Well I should probably get going and find my friends anyway. I’m sure they’re done shopping by now.” He paused again before letting go of her hand. “It was nice to meet you Sara.” He flashed another brilliant smile and then turned around.Sara mumbled “You too” as he walked away. “For crying out loud” she thought “that Joe Jonas is kind of strange.”********************************************************************************************“Don’t turn around Joe, just keep walking.” He told himself. But man did he want to turn around. He hated walking away from her like that. He would have loved to sit with her for a few more hours just talking. She was so easy to talk to and she didn’t even recognize him. She didn’t ask for his autograph or scream his name. Not that those things weren’t flattering sometimes but he needed more. There was so much he wanted to know about her but as soon as he’d seen those young girls across the restaurant with that gleam in their eyes and autograph books in hand he knew he had to get away then because as soon as one recognized him they all would. “Geez, she must have thought I was crazy pulling her out of there like that and then just leaving.”“Hey man, where have you been?” Joe looked up to see his little brother Nick walking toward him with several shopping bags in hand. “You were supposed to meet us like a half an hour ago.”“Sorry I was in this restaurant.” Joe answered him quietly looking down at the sidewalk.“Hey what’s wrong with you man, it’s like your mind is somewhere else. Anyway, what restaurant were you at? We’re supposed to meet Mom and Dad in 10 minutes for lunch.”Joe looked up then and tried to focus on his brother. “I didn’t eat there. I just sat”Nick looked at his brother confused, “You just sat there? By yourself?”Joe tried to hide the smile that was spreading across his face but it was too obvious. “What’s so funny?” Nick asked.“What? Nothing’s funny.” Joe responded still grinning.“Then what are you smiling about?”“Nothing,” Joe said “It’s just…”“It was a girl wasn’t it?” Joe and Nick both turned around and found their oldest brother Kevin standing next to them.“Well, yes.” Joe said “but…”“You got recognized?” Nick exclaimed. “This is our day off! What were you thinking? You didn’t keep your sunglasses on did you?”“Settle down little brother.” Kevin sighed while patting Nick’s back. He turned to Joe, “So there was a girl?”“Yes.”“And she recognized you?”“No.”“Well what exactly happened?” Kevin and Nick both demanded at the same time.“She ran into me, I mean literally, and there weren’t any other places to sit in the restaurant except my booth so she sat with me.”“You spent an entire meal with a girl and she didn’t recognize you?”Joe paused to think about it. “Well, she’s a little older than our regular fan base. Maybe she doesn’t know who we are…”“How old is she?” Kevin wanted to know “I mean are we talking Mom’s age?”“No!” Joe said sharply “And I don’t know how old she is I didn’t ask for her birth date.” He turned around and started walking down the sidewalk. “Anyway, we should get going, I left the restaurant in a hurry because I did see some girls with that look in their eyes.”Nick and Kevin followed him down the street. “Was she pretty?” Kevin asked, “Did you get her phone number?” Nick wanted to know. Joe stopped abruptly, “Can we talk about something else please? Where are we supposed to meet Mom and Dad?”“Alright, geez, we won’t talk about mystery girl anymore.” Kevin said smugly “We’re meeting Mom and Dad at a restaurant called Zelo’s. It’s just a few blocks from here.” He stepped in front of Joe to lead his brothers down the sidewalk. After a few minutes of silence Joe asked, “When does our flight leave?”“In three hours. Why?” Nick asked. Joe didn’t answer. They reached the restaurant and found their parents inside. As soon as they all sat down Nick blurted out “Joe met a girl!”“Nick shut up!” Joe said as he lightly punched his brother’s arm. “I did not.” He looked over at his parents who just smiled. “Yes you did.” Nick repeated. “Nick I told you I didn’t want to talk about it ok, can you just leave it alone please?” “How did you have time to meet a girl Joe?” Dad asked with a smile “You were only gone for an hour and half.”“I didn’t MEET a girl!” Joe cried “There was just a girl in the restaurant and she bumped into me and there were no other seats so she sat in my booth. That’s all! Now can we please move on?”Everyone at the table stared at Joe who slouched down in his seat. They were all silent for a moment until Mom picked up her menu and said quietly “If you don’t want to talk about it Joe that’s fine. We’ll find something else to talk about.”“Thank you.” Joe Jonas Fan Fiction: Meet Cute - Jonas Brothers Fan Site
